Madonna

Madonna Louise Ciccone was born on August 16, 1958, in Bay City, Michigan, to Chrysler and General Motors engineer Silvio Anthony Ciccone and Madonna Louise Fortin.

While studying at Rochester Adams High School, Madonna was a straight-A student and a cheerleader. Later, she attended the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance. In 1978, she moved to New York. Simultaneously with taking lessons at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, she worked as a waitress at Dunkin’ Donuts. Later, she became a backup singer and dancer for Patrick Hernandez. In 1979, Madonna and musician Dan Gilroy created band “Breakfast Club”, which they left in a year. In 1982, Madonna released her debut single “Everybody”. In 1983, her debut album “Madonna” was presented.

Modonna got the worldwide recognition after the release of her second album “Like a Virgin” (1984), which was certified diamond by RIAA. In 1987, she embarked on her Who’s That Girl World Tour. Her concert near Paris gathered more than 130 000 people and became her biggest concert attendance ever. Soon, the singer was called the “Artist of the Decade”. In 1990, her greatest hits compilation album “The Immaculate Collection” was released. It was sold over 30 million copies and became the best-selling compilation album by a solo artist in the history. In 1992, Madonna created her own entertainment company “Maverick”, which includes a record company, a film production company, associated music publishing, television broadcasting, book publishing and merchandising divisions. The singer was called the best-selling female recording artist of all time by Guinness World Records, the best-selling female rock artist of the 20th century, the top touring female artist of all time and the most successful solo artist in the history of American singles chart.

In 1985, the singer made her acting debut in “Vision Quest”. Her most notable acting works were in movies “Desperately Seeking Susan” (1985), “Dick Tracy” (1990) and “Evita” (1996).

In 1985, Madonna got married to actor Sean Penn. In 1989, they got divorced. From 2000 to 2008, she was married to British director Guy Ritchie. The singer has four children: Lourdes Maria (from Carlos Leon), Rocco Ritchie (from Guy Ritchie), David Banda (adopted) and Mercy James (adopted).
