2020 North American box office down 80% year-on-year

Full report to follow once final studio market share numbers are published.In a year blighted by the pandemic, total North American box office in 2020 reached $2.278bn and dropped 80.01% against the $11.399bn level attained in 2019.Sony’s Bad Boys For Life leads the January 1-December 31 2020 chart on $206.4m after opening in cinemas on January 17, followed by Universal’s 1917, a 2019 holdover that grossed $157.9m in 2020.Paramount’s Sonic The Hedgehog, which opened on February 14 and finished on $146.1m, ranks third.In a decimated box office year, most studios either pushed their tentpoles into 2021 or beyond, pivoted to PVoD, or licensed their titles to streamers.
