One Night in Miami” is a work of historical fiction, but the film stands to make history: Regina King could become the first Black woman nominated for a best director Oscar.

King, whose list of honors includes an Oscar and four Emmys for her acting, is also a prolific television director; she makes her feature directorial debut with the film.“I’d be proud of her because she deserves it,” screenwriter Kemp Powers says of King’s possible nomination.
