‘Maleficent’ and ‘Zombieland’ Deliver a Double Dose of Sequels this Weekend

A pair of sequels hit theaters this weekend in Disney’s Maleficent: Mistress of Evil and Sony’s Zombieland: Double Tap, the latter arriving in theaters ten years after the original.

Both will earn spots in the top three, though sandwiched between them will be WB’s Joker, which looks to continue its strong run and potentially top $250 million domestically by the end of the weekend.

At the same time, still in limited release, Neon’s Parasite is adding 30 locations and may find its way into the top ten if it can maintain momentum from last weekend.

Looking at what will be its seventh #1 opening of the year, Disney will debut Maleficent: Mistress of Evil in over 3,700 locations.

The film, which finds Angelina Jolie reprising the title role, arrives five years after the original opened with nearly $70 million and went on to gross over $758 million worldwide.
