From Netflix’s Fear Street to UK shocker Censor, a new wave of gory tales are being set in the recent past – but what can they tell us about the present?Netflix did not quite invent nostalgia, but you’d be forgiven for thinking otherwise.

The streamer certainly went to town on it with Stranger Things, which wore the 1980s like a badge of honour: the BMXs, the Dungeons & Dragons, the walkie-talkies.
