Susan Sarandon Reveals Paul Newman Gave Her Part of His Own Salary to Ensure Pay Equality on 1998 Film

Susan Sarandon has revealed that Paul Newman fought for her to be payed equally during the making of Robert Benton’s 1998 thriller “Twilight.” The actress told BBC that when she discovered her male co-stars and fellow leads Newman and Gene Hackman were equally being paid more than her, it was Newman who stepped up and took part of his own salary and gave it to Sarandon.“Emma Stone once came forward and said she got equal pay because her male stars insisted upon it and gave up something of theirs,” Sarandon said.

“That happened to me with Paul Newman at one point, when I did a film with him ages ago.

[Producers] said it was ‘favoured nations,’ but they only meant the two guys.”Sarandon said Newman eventually stepped forward and said, “Well, I’ll give you part of mine.” All three actors were equally billed on the film’s poster and in the marketing.
