The specialty film marketplace saw an uptick in the number of releases and box office gross, though most ticket-buyers went for Oscar contenders continuing to aim for a nomination bounce.
This year’s Oscar-nominated short films, meanwhile, packaged together and released by ShortsTV and Magnolia, took in $615K in 180 theaters Friday to Sunday.
That was down slightly from last year’s $660K opener from 184 runs, which was a record setter.
