While Marvel’s “Black Panther” exceeded expectations by leading the Oscar crafts races with six nominations, a testament to the global impact of Ryan Coogler’s zeitgeist-changing, superhero phenomenon, Damien Chazelle’s “First Man” underperformed by receiving only four nods.
