Joseph Fiennes Says Harvey Weinstein Threatened to End His Career: It Was a ‘Shock’

Joseph Fiennes quickly fell out of love with Miramax following 1998 Best Picture winner “Shakespeare in Love.”Fiennes, who allegedly beat out Daniel Day-Lewis to play the titular British playwright, recalled to The Guardian that producer Harvey Weinstein used a shocking “bullying tactic” after the film’s release and subsequent Oscar wins.

Fiennes was offered a five-picture deal with Miramax, which he turned down.“I have to be careful here,” Fiennes said, before explaining that Weinstein invited him to his hotel room to aggressively detail the proposed contract.

According to Fiennes, Weinstein said “shocking” things and confirmed that he would be entirely in charge of Fiennes’ career going forward.
