Steven Spielberg Says Netflix Films Shouldn’t Be Eligible for Oscars

The increasing ubiquity of Netflix has posed a serious issue for the Academy Awards and the industry at large, and thus far the Oscars have been reluctant to acknowledge Netflix’s increasing output of original films.

Beasts of No Nation was the first Netflix film in awards contention, but it failed to score any Oscar nominations.

This past year, however, Netflix’s most serious contender yet Mudbound fared far better, scoring four nominations including a groundbreaking Best Cinematography nod for Rachel Morrison.
