Why One Survivor Regrets Trusting Documentary Directors Amy Ziering and Kirby Dick (Exclusive)

For the past year, Alexia Norton Jones has been in anguish, constantly reliving an experience that she deeply regrets.On Dec.

30, 2019, Jones flew to Los Angeles from her home in Arizona, to talk to the directors of the documentary “On the Record” about the night in 1990 when she says music mogul Russell Simmons raped her.

Jones was a last-minute addition to the film, which features accounts from several women who claim they had been sexually assaulted or attacked by Simmons.

“On the Record” premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in late January 2020, only three weeks after its directors — Amy Ziering and Kirby Dick — spoke to Jones for roughly two hours, pushing her to recount details of the alleged assault, she says, without caring about her as a person.“I remember thinking, ‘Is this how documentaries are made?’” Jones says, recalling the time she spent with them.
