Our favorite Cannes pastime? Applauding.

And we’re not just talking about a polite applause, but a roaring, whole short film’s worth of standing up and cheering at world premieres.Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis” recently made headlines at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival for a 12-minute standing ovation — despite initial reports that it was only 10 minutes (you really have to count every clap).

But for industry standards, that’s literally twice as much enthusiasm for the epic musical blockbuster biopic than George Miller’s “Three Thousand Years of Longing,” which yearned for an ovation longer than its six minutes worth.

Applause for David Cronenberg’s “Crimes of the Future” similarly clocked in at under seven minutes.Yes, Cannes standing O’s are a baffling phenomenon.

And don’t even get us started on the double standards of walkouts.
